Digital Transformation; Are we really ready for the change?
Projects inclined to digital transformation often results in not much of success among some organizations, but there are some steps that they can put in place to increase the chances of achieving success.
Some small businesses relate the concept of digital transformation to stories of trials and errors, the result of which has seen them fail to, either, take it up or not getting it right at all.
If, however, the proper dynamics are set in place, for business models to witness the transformation.
Realistically, digital transformation, cannot take place, when certain conditions are not true and if one embarks on such project, the risk of failure is high.
Taking it from the same perspective, if certain factors are true, the transformation could yield success.
Below, are some things that should be in place, if one intends to achieve success with digital transformation in projects:
Start small
Being a digital project does not mean that your approach to it must be large, a situation that might present your project as one that is beyond your reach.
You need to take your steps in bits. Allow the process to be thoroughly defined, in order to determine the end goal.
You can as well learn some few things along the way because you obtain both positive and negative feedback that would assist your transformation process.
In summary, you need to apply an agile approach. Do not over-project your expectations, but rather, direct your focus on what appears to be achievable in a set period.
Having the Right Data
Data is a currency to the success of many projects, not just data, but quality data. Do you have reliable data about your production, distribution, customers, and competitors? Is your data collection consistent too?
You must let your clients know what quantum of data can serve your purpose. The issue of transparency comes in here.
Carrying out this simple act, though tough, would save you from spending cash on digital transformation projects that would not be successful.
What are your skill sets?
Aside from starting small and getting the right data, the correct process of digital transformation involves the right capacities, especially, within the organization, but that does not mean that they cannot look outwards.
All the skill set required to accomplish the transformation, most of the time, are often not concentrated at one point. It is, therefore, necessary to explore all means, both externally and internally, to acquire those skill sets.
Core competence is a key, to driving digital transformation. If companies cannot handle this on their own, they should partner with vendors, most likely to be highly informed of emerging technologies.
Trying to build your own team from scratch, with the machinery involved, might be expensive. Having people that already possess the competence or collaborating with vendors can make the difference.
Are we ready?
Over the years, it has been made quite clear that digital transformation can be successful if the right factors as discussed above are properly implemented.
Digital transformation has gone on the same historical path, like many other processes in technological development.
Digital transformation must be integrated into business values, to improve on the applications of competencies and daily skills.
