Climate change which is commonly referred to as the upsurge in the average surface temperatures on the earth’s surface has since 2016 become a global concern. To this end, the historic Paris Agreement on the subject was passed and it went into effect in 2016.

This agreement enabled most countries around the world to become more intentional about the urgent responses needed as it regards the growing threat of climate change.

World leaders are in their numbers collectively gearing up so as to proffer key solutions that will help to secure global net-zero by 2050 and keep the world within 1.5C of warming.

 

For this and many other reasons, cleanbuild.africa in collaboration with Creative Space and Innovation Support Network hosts a climate action stakeholders’ forum that will bring to fore some of the pertinent issues around cleantech and climate change in the context of Africa.

 

According to the Global Environment Facility, beyond SDG 13: Climate Action, a deliberate transformation to low-emission, climate-resilient pathways can contribute to achieving and preserving the other related SDGs namely; Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), Life Below Water (SDG 14) and Life on Land (SDG 15).

 

What this means is that all the sustainable goals can best be achieved collectively rather than in isolation. As such, climate action requires joint efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, leveraging modern technologies while strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-induced impacts.

 

It is even more critical for African countries to achieve these goals because the continent is disproportionately vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, which compromises its development and threatens the livelihoods of millions of Africans.

 

The climate-focused virtual event with the theme “Building a Sustainable Climate Action Ecosystem”, will be held on Friday, October 8, 2021. It aims to assemble cleantech startups and advocates, stakeholders, policymakers, investors, and other major players across all climate verticals ranging from Greentech innovations, renewable energy, pollution & waste management, and sustainability, among others.

 

What will be discussed at the event

 

The Building Sustainable Climate Action virtual summit will be centered around the following:

  • Ensuring more inclusive and collaborative climate actions and initiatives on national and regional levels: the value of collective action.
  • Dissecting the role cleantech startups are playing in ensuring that Africa is protected from the harmful effects of global warming
  • Exploring the state of climate actions/initiatives in Africa; challenges, opportunities, and the role of Media in accelerating climate action impact.
  • Highlighting the focus of climate action and where the divide exists as well as ways to bridge the gap.
